2014 BMW X6 xDrive V8
2014 BMW x6 Model Overview
The BMW X6 may go down in history as one of automobiledom’s greatest curiosities, but for now the model continues to offer customers a uniquely styled luxury SUV. The X6 rides on the same platform as the X5, but receives a radically raked roofline and bulging fenders for a sporty, imposing stance.
The 2014 BMW X6 is offered in three models, including the xDrive35i, xDrive50i, and over-the-top X6 M. All-wheel drive is standard on all models, and BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque serves as the base engine. If more power is needed, the xDrive50i’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 provides 400 hp and 450 lb-ft. If that’s not enough, the superlative X6 M’s version of the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 pumps out 555 hp and 500 lb-ft. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard in xDrive35i and xDrive50i models, while a six-speed sport automatic gearbox with paddle shifters is the only transmission offered on the X6 M. The xDrive35i’s EPA fuel economy rating rises slightly to 17/24 mpg city/highway for 2014, as do ratings for the xDrive50i and X6 M — which stand at 14/21 mpg and 13/17 mpg, respectively.
The X6 looks the part of a sporty SUV, and it also has the performance to back up that image. An X6 xDrive35i scooted to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds in our tests, while an X6 M reached the same speed in 4.0 seconds flat — impressive when you consider they weigh upwards of 5000 pounds. Despite good acceleration, the X6 isn’t as thrilling in the turns. We said in a review of the X6 M, “Unless pressed aggressively, which we never recommend on public roads, the X6 M’s chassis doesn’t offer many cornering solutions beyond understeer.”
Inside, BMW claims 25.6 cubic-feet behind the rear seats, with a total of 59.7 cubic-feet available with the seats folded down. However, the raked roofline may complicate things when loading taller cargo. Space is also limited when it comes to passengers, as the X6 seats four — one less than its X5 sibling. Nevada leather upholstery comes standard, as does BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, which receives updates for 2014. Automatic climate control, Bluetooth, heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, and push-button start are also standard. A navigation system is available on xDrive35i models, and standard on xDrive50i and X6 M models.
